Attacker Hits Man's Face With Bottle, Deposited in Jail

Alcohol related assaults usually involve the contents of a bottle, but one man arrested Nov. 15 for the assault of his mother's boyfriend faces a felony assault charge for using the bottle itself as a weapon.

Officer James Nunnemacher was called to 182 Cumberland St., apt. 77 for a report of an assault. He arrived at the address to find a man with a minor laceration to his right temple. He told Nunnemacher his girlfriend's son, Willie Rivera, 23, of 280 Dulude Ave., Apt. 2F, had thrown a beer bottle at him during an argument about him leaving the house.

Rivera denied throwing the bottle, saying his mother's boyfriend had pushed him and he'd defended himself, punching the man but not using a weapon. Inside the apartment, Nunnemacher saw signs of a struggle including a broken mirror, pieces of a 40-ounce beer bottle and blood on the floor.

Rivera was at a loss to explain the broken bottle, or how his punch had caused the laceration on the man's temple. Nunnemacher arrested him and charged him with felony assault with a deadly weapon.
