POLL: Do You Use Your Cell Phone While Driving?

By now, most of us have heard the warnings to stop using our cell phones while driving, but today the National Transportation Safety Board took a firm stance on the issue.

The board has issued a recommendation that all 50 states, and the District of Columbia, "ban the nonemergency use of portable electronic devices (other than those designed to support the driving task) for all drivers." Rhode Island already bans texting while driving, but the National Transportation Safety Board's recommendation would take it a step further, banning phone use altogether.

The advice comes just a few days after the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration released findings from its recent survey that studied drivers' perceptions of the safety risks associated with distracted driving. Three-quarters of respondents, according to the report, admitted to answering phone calls at least some of the time while driving.

i can't tell you how many times i've seen people roll through stop signs, take 5 minutes to make a turn, drive through a cross walk, almost run into my car, etc... what do they all have in common? they are on their phone. i'm at the point where i look at them and make a telephone hand up to my ear and say "get off the phone!!!!" even though they can't here me. most don't even make eye contact. it is so frustrating. if they do make it a law i hope they enforce it to the fullest.

A $500 fine with the proceeds going back to the towns, the deficits would be funded in no time. Nobody can text and drive safely at the same time.

I have to ask how many laws will be enough.. We republicans are trying to shrink government and get them out of our lives. Everytime I turn around we are looking for a way to screw people with laws. I believe we have enough laws on the books to screw the American people right now.

That's against in Rhode Island, because everything is against the law in Rhode Island.
