Grass Roots Efforts to Fund the First Preventive Breast Cancer Vaccine Moves Forward

Breast Cancer Prevention News

Local resident, Judy Medeiros Fitzgerald of Portsmouth and Delray Beach, Florida is one of five women known as “The Champions of the Pink Vaccine”. The group’s efforts are dedicated to supporting the Pink Vaccine, the first vaccine with the potential to prevent breast cancer.

The vaccine was developed by Dr. Vincent Tuohy at the Learner Research Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. The Champions of the Pink Vaccine is comprised of four breast cancer survivors including Judy, and one breast cancer surgeon. Their grass-roots effort is dedicated to promoting public awareness and achieving funding for the vaccine to finally be tested in humans. If successful, the Pink Vaccine could eradicate the disease of breast cancer for all future generations.

Last week Judy was honored to participate in an awards ceremony for Professor Tuohy in Cleveland.  The Mort and Iris November Distinguished Chair in Innovative Breast Cancer Research was awarded to Dr. Tuohy and included a $1 million endowment. The November’s vision and passion for the Pink Vaccine is a major step toward achieving the necessary funding to begin clinical trials.

Judy continues to work tirelessly to raise funds for the vaccine through book sales, product sales, and so much more.  One hundred percent of profits and donations from funds collected go directly to the funding of the vaccine. Donations to the vaccine fund may be made on her website www.Sisters4Prevention.com.

Judy has also enlisted others in her efforts and was able to present Dr Tuohy with a check for $1500 for funds raised by her sister, Patricia Medeiros Murray, and the faculty and students of Gold Hill Middle School in Tega Cay, South Carolina where Pat serves as a math teacher.  Students and faculty raised funds during the month of October by selling bracelets, wear pink days, and filling "pink piggy banks" painted by Pat with "Pennies for Prevention".
