Holiday Stroll Boasts New Caroling Contest, WHS Band

Update: The caroling contest has been canceled due to lack of participation.

You're in for a few new treats during this year's Holiday Stroll Wednesday, 4 to 8 p.m.

The night still boasts horse-drawn carriage rides up and down a holiday-decorated Main Street and businesses open with special evening offers, carolers and a tree lighting ceremony with Santa followed by audiences with the Christmas icon.

Added this year, said organizer Ainsley Morisseau-Cantoral, will be a caroling contest for small groups of 2 to 10 people. The contest will be broadcast live on 1380 WNRI.

Also, for the first time, the Woonsocket High School band brass and clarinet members will perform at the event, Morisseau-Cantoral said.

Woonsocket's First Mayor, George Grant, will greet members of the crowd at the Museum of Work and Culture during the Stroll this year. Dec. 11 is actually Grant's 176th birthday, so there'll be cake (you should show up early for the cake) as Eric Eckilson performs as Grant, reciting excerpts from his 1889 inaugural speech. The performances begin at 5:30,  6:15 and 7 p.m. There'll also be a 20 percent discount at the Museum store.
