Local Quaker Meeting to present a screening of The Last Western Heretic

Smithfield Friends Meeting will present a screening of The Last Western Heretic DVD

Smithfield Friends Meeting is pleased to invite any interested persons to join them in viewing a New Zealand Public Television documentary filmed in 2007 to mark the fortieth anniversary of the dismissal of charges brought against the Rev. Lloyd Geering by the Presbyterian Assembly of that country. Geering, then head of the denomination’s theological college, was accused of doctrinal error and disturbing church unity. Since that time, however, he has earned international renown as a religious scholar with number major books to his credit and great popularity as a public lecturer. The 71 minute DVD features his explanation of his theological beliefs, vintage television clips from his 1967 defense speech, and a concluding scene filmed on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

It will be shown at the Meeting House, 108 Smithfield Rd. (rt. 146A), Woonsocket, on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 1:00 PM. Tom Hall, pastor of the Meeting, and since 2000 Geering’s close friend and editor, will offer a brief introduction before the showing and will entertain questions at the end.
