Belknap Drops Out of City Council Race

City Council challenger Jeffrey Belknap dropped out of the running yesterday, narrowing the relevancy of Tuesday night's primary down to the mayoral race candidates.

Woonsocket City Board of Canvassers Manager Estelle Corriveau said Belknap removed himself from the running Thursday, which means the remaining candidates for City Council will make it on the ballot. Belknap's notice came too late to remove his name from the ballot, according to a report from the Valley Breeze.

The remaining candidates are: Council President John Ward, Vice President Dan Gendron, Christopher Beauchamp, Al Brien, Marc Dubois, Roger Jalette and Bob Moreau against challengers Eric Cartier, Garrett Mancieri, Richard Fagnant, Melissa Murray, Kathryn M. Dumais and School Committee Members Anita McGuire-Forcier and Chris Roberts.

The mayoral candidates left leading up to Tuesday's primary are: Incumbent Mayor Leo Fontaine, current state Rep. Lisa Baldelli Hunt (D-Dist. 49, Woonsocket), David Fisher, and Michael Moniz.
