SMITHFIELD, RI, ISSUED MARCH 3, 2014…What buyers are looking for in a business is often far different than what prospective purchasers seek. With that belief in mind, mind, XPX Boston (and RI) offers a ‘don’t miss’ program on March 19: “Owners are from Mars, Buyers are from Venus: Business Value is the Universal Language.”

Three experts in business valuation, business acquisition and the sale of a business will lead the seminar that will be held at Bryant University, Fisher Student Center, 1150 Douglas Avenue, Smithfield, RI on Wednesday, March 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30.

The program will address the challenges that business owners (and buyer) face, namely that most of a business owner’s accumulated wealth is in the value of their business, yet few owners understand the key elements of their business that drives business value. The program will explore the important elements that a business owner might consider, both in the long term and short term, which will drive up the value of the business at the time of sale. Peri Aptaker, Charles Milot, and Fred Roses will, each of whom brings expertise in the subject of business valuation, sales and acquisitions.

Peri Aptaker will outline the many variables that can be considered in determining business value.  Managing Director of KLR Wealth Management, LLC, she provides business valuation strategic planning consulting to clients looking to enhance the value of their business. She is a qualified expert witness in RI and MA state and federal courts; chairs the Women’s Business Exchange, and is a member of the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accounts, the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She holds a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School, and a Masters of Science in Taxation from Bentley College. She is also a member of the Rhode Island Women’s Bar Association and the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts.

Charles Milot is a native of Providence, RI, who, after attending Harvard College and earning an MBA from the Wharton School, spent three years as a commercial/investment banker in New York City. He then acquired Winthrop-Atkins Co., Inc. of Middleboro, MA, a manufacturer of desk calendars and photographic packaging with $6.0 million in revenue.  Between 1986 and 1999, he grew the company to $15.0 million and in 1999 merged Winthrop-Atkins with the Chilcote Company, their largest competitor. Between 1999 and 2004 he served as a director and part owner of The Chilcote Company, a $50 million employee owned manufacturing company based in Cleveland, Ohio.  After the merger with Winthrop-Atkins, Chilcote became the largest supplier of wedding albums and packaging products to professional photographers in the United States. He became the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, managing 86 salespeople and customer service representatives spread across four business units throughout the United States.  He left in 2004 and sold his interest in the company, and in 2005 acquired the Pella Windows and Doors Distributorship for Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands.  The company has 42 employees and four retail locations as well as a distribution facility in Fall River. He can speak to the issues of sale and acquisition of businesses.

Fred Roses is an entrepreneur who can speak firsthand about the issues of selling a business. He started a business on the dining room table of his house in 1977, making costume jewelry.  Over the years, he grew the business to a $20 million annual venture with 35 employees. When several would-be purchasers came knocking in 2012, he finally said yes. Over the years, he changed the name on the door a few times, refocused the product line repeatedly, made some mistakes, frustrated his professional advisors, and built a worldwide brand – managing in the process to live happily ever after.

Registration and networking begins at 7:30 a.m. and extends to 8 a.m. From 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the program will take place. A buffet breakfast will be served. The cost to attend is $45. The program will provide the attendee which information from these three perspectives, and promises to be both educational and enjoyable.
