Weather Service Warns of Potential for Heavy Thunderstorms

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Woonsocket and all of Rhode Island today and the rest of the week, with the potential for heavy thunderstorms and rain causing localized flooding.

In Woonsocket, the forecast calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms, some with the potential for heavy rain. The day will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 78.

The city is enjoying a break from the recent string of 90-degree days, though temperatures will remain in the 80s throughout the week. "The heat wave broke beautifully last night," said Woonsocket Fire Chief Gary Lataille.

Some Rhode Island cooling centers are remaining open this week, including North Smithfield's Scouter’s Hall; Main Street; (Call 767-2206 for hours). However, no official cooling centers are open in the city at this time.

Unofficially, Lataille said, the Woonsocket Senior Center at 84 Social St. is available for elders to get in from the heat if it proves too much. There are no services (such as food or entertainment) available for the general public, but there's a cool spot for you to sit if you need it.

The Harris Woonsocket Public Library at 303 Clinton St. is another spot where you can get in from the heat — and see some of your neighbors.
