Local Scouts Hike through Rocky Mountains

Nine local Scouts recently went on a two-week backpacking trip in the Rocky Mountains at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.  Philmont, the largest national High Adventure Base covers 214 square miles of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains, where elevations range from 6,500 to 12,441 feet.

Scouts from Central Falls, Woonsocket, Newport, and Warwick participated in a visit to the US Air Force Academy, Pike’s Peak and the Koshare Indian Museum in Colorado.  Scouts took part in shooting sports, spar pole climbing, rock climbing and rappelling, a cowboy dinner in the backcountry, and 3-D archery shooting.  The Scouts also climbed three mountains, the tallest of which was 11,400 feet.

Scouts spent the first two days of their journey in Colorado Springs adjusting to the climate and altitude.  Prior to the hike, Scouts prepared from December up until their departure date of June by hiking with full gear to get used to the weight.

The group returned from their trek on July 13. All Scouts who participated were 14 years or older and were accompanied by adult troop leaders.
