Celebration Time, Victory Day, Sports Brief, Farewell to the Chief

Celebrate the City: Just in case you haven't heard, Woonsocket is celebrating its 125th anniversary — and the series of events continues Aug. 14 with "Then and Now" at St. Ann's Arts and Cultural Center (a slide show of historic Woonsocket images). If you're just tuning in, you missed Rock the Arts at River Falls, a buffet, concert and art show that drew about 200 people last night.

Save Some Cash: Are you a teacher getting your classroom ready for the start of school? Ocean State Job Lot is offering a 30-percent discount for teachers.

Trash Pickup Delays: In observance of Victory Day, the Woonsocket Recycle Drop-off Facility will be closed Monday, Aug. 12. Residents are reminded that curbside pick-up of trash and recycling for the week of Aug. 12 to 16 will be delayed by one day. Call the Solid Waste Division at (401) 767-8880 if you have any questions.

Be a Woonsocket Sports Booster: Are you a coach, parent, or player on a Woonsocket sports team? Share your team's success on Woonsocket Patch by signing up to blog.

In case you missed it - The week began with the news that Fire Chief Gary Lataille will be retiring in September. The mayor is looking for a new top fire official.
