Arc de Triomphe Work Continues Friday, N. Main Street Open Nights

Fabric walls to be installed week of City's 125th Block Party, Aug. 29.

Work on a replica  Arc de Triomphe being built in Monument Square continues Friday morning after the delivery of some special-order parts, and the framing should be done by Saturday.

Al Beauparlant, co-chair for the City's 125th Birthday Block Party Committee, said the replica, the centerpiece for the  $70,000 Block Party Aug. 29, paid for through donations and fundraising, will get its mural-bearing fabric walls the Monday or Tuesday before of the block party.

The murals will depict Woonsocket triumphs: the US Rubber Company's creation of decoy tanks for the allies during WWII, the industrial heritage and the visit of French Field Marshal Ferdinand Foch to honor soldiers' sacrifices in WWI, and the immigration of French Canadians during the Industrial Revolution.

During construction, N. Main Street traffic has been detoured around the square on Blackstone Street. During the evenings, that stretch of N. Main Street will be opened to traffic, Beauparlant said.
