Children to participate in outdoor adventure, wilderness trek includes hiking, kayaking, more

Trekking from the northernmost part of the state to its southern border, Brian LaFauci, a former captain in the RI National Guard and current National Guard Bureau contractor, and Kevin Nerney,  a Developmental Disability Attorney ,will embark on a 3- day journey through Rhode Island, under no motorized power  and utilizing various forms of transportation, with the goal of allowing their children to share that experience, in safe and age appropriate activities along the way.

Lafauci and Nerney, both 37, are parents of the three girls and one boy who will take part in the trip.    The children range in age from 4 to 7 years old, love spending time outdoors, are physically active and recently started kayaking. The main goal is for these children to experience the Rhode Island wilderness, as they join in at various points of the journey. This undertaking will have them traveling through woods, roads, rivers and ponds, using bikes, canoes, kayaks and sailboats, as well as hiking and swimming portions of the trip. Departure will be Thursday evening in the Buck Hill Management Area, in the northwest corner of the state, and plans are to end on Block Island on Saturday, with a swim to shore from an anchored sailboat. Should the sailboat plan become unacceptable due to inclement weather, the journey will be re-routed to Watch Hill, the southernmost point of the state.  The children will be mostly hiking and canoeing, and brought to various meeting points by supporters in order to join in with their fathers.  A ten to twelve mile hike through the George Washington Preserve Campground will be one of the highlights of their trip.

Brian LaFauci and his family are residents of North Scituate, RI. Kevin Nerney and his family reside in Gloucester, RI.
