Holiday Rubbish, Back to School Soon, Block Party Coming

Labor Day Rubbish, Recycling - In observance of Labor Day, on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 2,  the Woonsocket Recycle Facility, located at 943 River St. will be closed.

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (Central Landfill) in Johnston is also closed Sept. 2. Curbside pick-up of rubbish and recycling for the week of Sept. 2 to Sept. 6 will be delayed by one day.

Residents are reminded that any overloaded trash carts or recycling carts placed at curbside will not be collected. In those cases, it is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant to properly dispose of the waste at their own expense.

Back to School - The first day of school in Woonsocket is Wednesday, Aug. 28. Mind the crosswalks and drive carefully.

Arc de Triomphe - Be on the lookout for decorated fabric walls coming this week for the Arc. Images of Woonsocket's triumphs will be depicted across the edifice, which will serve as the centerpiece for Thursday's 125th birthday block party for the city.

Block Party - Billed as the largest Block Party on the East Coast, the city's 125th birthday celebration Thursday from 4 to 11 p.m. will stretch a half-mile from Monument Square to Market Square, packed with 10 acts on each of 12 stages, and 28 performances altogether. Eleven bands will play non-stop from 7 to 10 p.m., complemented by light shows, performance artists and vendors.

Food Bank Needs Help - The St. James Episcopal Church's Prescott Beach Food Bank, 24 Hamlet Ave., is in need of bars of soap, as well as any canned or boxed food items you can donate. Find a good sale or thin out your cupboard and help them stock up. Call the church at 401-762-2222 or bring items to the Food Bank during their hours Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m.
