Taxpayer's Lawsuit, Scouts Meet, Trash Pickup Delay, Food Bank Needs You

Taxpayers Legal Defense Fund Meeting - The Woonsocket Taxpayers Legal Defense Fund organizers will meet tonight, 7 p.m. at the Elks Hall, 380 Social St. Guest Speaker for the evening will be Attorney Robert Senville, Esq., according to MyWoonsocket.com

The meeting will provide information about the lawsuit challenging the legality of the city’s Supplemental Tax. The meeting will provide taxpayers an opportunity to learn about the suit and to consider whether or not they wish to join as plaintiffs. Taxpayers are asked to bring copies of their Supplemental Tax bill in the event that they choose to join. There is no charge to join as a plaintiff.   

Scouts meet - Troop 2 will be holding its first Scout meeting of the year, 7:00 pm at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church (OLQM) 1409 Park Ave Woonsocket. Any boy aged 12 (or completed the 5th grade) to 18 who is interested and experiencing the adventure of scouting is welcome. Scouting offers a program for young men participate in outdoor adventures, community service, team building and leadership. Labor Day Rubbish, Recycling - In observance of Labor Day, on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 2, the Woonsocket Recycle Facility, located at 943 River St., was closed.

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (Central Landfill) in Johnston was also closed Sept. 2. Curbside pick-up of rubbish and recycling for the week of Sept. 2, to Sept. 6 will be delayed by one day.

Residents are reminded that any overloaded trash carts or recycling carts placed at curbside will not be collected. In those cases, it is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant to properly dispose of the waste at their own expense.

Race Against Racism volunteers sought - Volunteers are needed for YWCA Race Against Racism at Autumnfest. Many opportunities are available to support the 5K run/walk on Oct. 13 from 7 to 11 a.m.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas: race set up, registration, water station, on course guide, finish line, and clean up.  A volunteer form is available on the Race Against Racism website

Food Bank Needs Help - The St. James Episcopal Church's Prescott Beach Food Bank, 24 Hamlet Ave., is in need of bars of soap, as well as any canned or boxed food items you can donate. Find a good sale or thin out your cupboard and help them stock up. Call the church at 401-762-2222 or bring items to the Food Bank during their hours Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m.
