Help for Military Families, MLK Weekend Begins

Aid for Military Families - Military service members and spouses are invited to the Winter Assistance Fair!  Free Heating Assistance, Winter coats & gloves, even tax prep help. Saturday, Jan. 18, 12 - 4 p.m. at 541 Airport Road, Warwick, RI. 

This event is sponsored by Heroes 2 Hired and the RI Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve. Call 401-275-1248.

Trash delay - Due to the short holiday week, On Monday Jan. 20 in the observance of Martin Luther King Day; rubbish and recycling pick-up for the week of January 20 to January 24 will be delayed by one day. Please DO NOT place plastic bags in the recycle carts. Those bags can be returned to many big-box retailers or to the Woonsocket Recycle Facility (943 River Street) for proper recycling.

Extra recycling may also be brought to the Woonsocket Recycle Facility located at 943 River St.

MLK Weekend starts tonight - MLK Weekend Begins tonight with the J.W. Hinson & Community Scholarship Banquet 6:30 - 9 p.m. at Savini’s Restaurant, 476 Rathbun St.

The Keynote Speaker is Kwanza Hall, City Council member in Atlanta, GA. Purchase tickets for $25 at St. James Baptist Church or NWBRV’s office on 141 Olo Street. 

Career Fair - The Woonsocket MLK Community Committee will host a career fair at Woonsocket High School, 777 Cass Ave., on Jan. 18, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. as part of Martin Luther King Weekend.


The fair includes a keynote speaker, refreshments, and workshops. The theme for this year's events is "Let Freedom Ring: 50 Year's Later...

Donate for the homeless 
- To continue Martin Luther King's work for economic justice, Youth RAP at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley will be distributing basic need items to the homeless in Woonsocket on MLK Day Monday, Jan. 20. You can donate items at 719 Front St, Suite 103. Call 401-762-0993. 

Work on Rte. 295 - The RI DOT has posted the following traffic advisories for Rte. 295: 
  • Cumberland/Lincoln: I-295 North, from Exit 9 (Rte. 146) to Exit 10 (Rte. 122/Mendon Rd.), two lanes of travel open due to construction on the Blackstone Viaduct.
  • Cumberland/Lincoln: Split-lane traffic pattern on I-295 South, from Exit 11 (Rte. 114/Diamond Hill Rd.) to Exit 9 (Rte. 146). Trucks heading south are directed to utilize the left lane via the median crossover road. Motorists exiting on Exit 10 (Rte. 122/Mendon Rd.) must use the right lane. Those entering I-295 South from Mendon Rd. will be required to yield at the bottom of the ramp to highway traffic.
