Report: Chafee to Join Democratic Party

The nation's only Independent governor will reportedly become a Democrat before the 2014 election.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee is joining the Democratic Party ahead of the 2014 campaign season, WJAR.com reported two Democratic officials said Thursday. Chafee, who won his first term in 2010 as an Independent, served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican but left the GOP in 2007. He has been the country's only Independent governor.  Chafee's staff has so far not confirmed his plan, but it doesn't come as a big surprise to political watchers. Chafee has been saying for months that he was thinking about the switch, and his ideology throughout his career has more closely aligned with Deomcratic ideals. He also publicly supported President Barack Obama and spoke at last year's Democratic National Convention. The move could make for a crowded race in …

Fisher to Host 'Listening' Event May 23

Mayoral candidate seeks public input in campaign for city's top office.

Dave Fisher, Green Party candidate for Mayor in Woonsocket, will host the first in a series of public listening events at Harris Public Library May 23, 6-8 p.m. Fisher said he'll use the event to gather input and insight from local residents and business owners on the future of the city. “One of the key values of the Green Party is grassroots democracy,” says Fisher, “given our current situation in Woonsocket, it is more important than ever for people to get involved in the process.” Fisher recently launched a website outlining four-point platform, including homestead exemptions awarded by length of residency, a 5-year inventory/tangible asset tax holiday, hiring a full-time grant writer for the city, efficiency/renewable energy upgrades…

Woonsocket's Voters Backed Obama By 64 Percent

Woonsocket Patch asked voters who they supported for president, and why.

The election is over, and while the majority of Woonsocket voters sided with President Barack Obama (Obama: 7,978, Romney: 4,111) with a 64 percent majority, not all did, and the outcome continues to draw comments on Woonsocket Patch. Today, we've got a few opinions on each side of the Romney/Obama question from election day with faces to match, including one charming nonagenarian voter (We're featuring her photo for that, not because she voted for Obama): At Crepeau Court Nov. 6, Bertha Julevich, accompanied by her son, Mark, was out to cast her vote for Obama. Bertha didn't mince words. "I'm an old lady," she announced cheerfully. She turns 99 in December. Bertha said she wanted to live up to her responsibility as a citizen. "I had to …

People like Obama because he is an excellent public speaker...that's it. He will keep the poor, poor....and the rich, rich..he wants you to think he's helping you, he's just full of fluff..no substance. I work and he certainly hasn't helped me. If you don't work, he'll keep you unemployed, and keep paying welfare recipients, because all of a sudden, they get out to vote now. Never did before...…   more ›

Packed At The Polls: Eager Voters Kept Canvassers Busy Tuesday

Turnout tally at 48 percent with mail-in ballots still uncounted.

With mail-in ballots remaining uncounted, the Board of Canvassers reports a modest voter turnout at 11,973 for Election Day Tuesday, about 48 percent of eligible voters. "It was very, very busy," said Board of Canvassers Manager Estelle Corriveau. Lines of unregistered voters crowded City Hall to sign up to vote for president - thanks to a provision under RI law. The voter count was at 90 at 1 p.m. By 7:30 p.m., with only half an hour left to vote, there was still a line out the door at the Board of Canvassers office. Polling places across the city reported high numbers and steady attendance throughout the day: At Bernon Heights School, about 640 voters had turned out by 3 p.m. At Leo Savoie School, the count was 798 by 1:30 p.m. At …

Woonsocket Election 2012: Candidates Weigh In

Local representatives give their thoughts on voters' wishes, thank people for voting.

Shortly after polls closed Tuesday night, Stephen Casey vowed to bring Woonsocket together to address its challenges as the new Democratic representative for Dist. 50. "I'm very happy with the results that we have," Casey said at Ciros Tavern Tuesday night about an hour after voting was done, "I can't thank my wife enough." Casey thanked new and old friends who helped him during his campaign, and, "The people who came out for Jon Brien as well," he said. Casey had just arrived at the tavern after staying at Bernon Heights till the polls closed, outside in cold weather. He said his supporters were likely still a little hypothermic. He commended everyone's exhibition of citizenship. "I congratulate everybody who did it on both sides of the…

Cicilline, Langevin, Whitehouse win Re-Election

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.

It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago. In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …
