There really are a lot of things to do in this little state of ours, you just need to know where to find them. Here is one of my favorite local getaway spots: 45-Minute Drive: Block Island Block Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 13 miles south of the coast of Rhode Island and is separated from the mainland by the Block Island Sound. Visitors to BI can get there quickly and affordably by taking either the traditional ferry or the …
Just 15 minutes from Attleboro, McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI offers an inexpensive alternative to Fenway Park for families and baseball fans. Tickets for the games range from $5 for seniors and children, to $11 for box seats. General admission tickets cost $7. If you get hungry at the game the stadium has a variety of foods to choose from including the traditional ballpark staples of hot dogs, peanuts and beer to more local favorites like doughboys and Del’s Frozen Lemonade. The atmosphere is family friendly at McCoy with the teams’ polar bear mascot Paws around to entertain and take photos…
Revisit your younger days when you hopped in the car, started the engine and drove off in search of something fun. The Sunday Patch Passport maps out where you can go on a 15-, 30- or 60-minute drive from your home. You won’t want to miss these unique stops on our trip. First stop: Purgatory Chasm Purgatory Chasm, located about 30 minutes outside of Woonsocket is as dangerous as it is stunning. This is not a place to bring your very young children (unless you plan to carry them) or sandals. The chasm is a quarter mile long gap in the middle of the Massachusetts woods, hemmed in by granite …

While Woonsocket has an abundance of rummage sales and collectible shops, each filled with its own unique treasures, for the antiquer that appreciates the hunt and the rush of finding a true bargain, Nana's Attic is a must-see. As the name implies, the store is a paradise for the curious with trinkets and oddities covering nearly every square inch of spare space. Cranberry glassware stands atop an antique shelf stacked with books, statues, and various trinkets. A beautiful oak bench is buried beneath a pile of pillows, fabric, and other odds and ends.  Even from the outside, the store is …

If you and your children don’t have the answers to these questions, you surely will after spending a fun-filled day exploring the rich heritage of historic Woonsocket Rhode Island. Starting at the Museum of Work and Culture, children and their families will soon learn that Woonsocket is a proud community with a deep, rich heritage. The museum is a true gem that exhibits the culture of Woonsocket’s French-Canadian residents featuring hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages. The …
Although the Museum of Work and Culture, where visitors have the opportunity to experience what school, work and home life would have been like for a child during the 19th century, is extremely kid-friendly with exciting, interactive hands on exhibits, young visitors will likely agree that the true excitement is not necessarily what happens within the museum's walls, but what can happen outside the confines of those walls. One of the Museum's best kept secrets is the opportunity to leave with an exciting adventure in hand. A Blackstone Valley Adventure Pack is a fun-filled backpack that can …
Though seated prominently on Cumberland Street in Woonsocket, a spot many residents drive by every day, St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center is indeed, a hidden gem. Woonsocket's own "Sistine Chapel" is in fact, overlooked by many and a surprising number of native Rhode Islanders are unaware of the beauty that awaits inside. Stepping inside St. Ann may be as close as any visitor to Woonsocket can get to heaven on earth. Just about every inch of the 93-year-old church is decorated with intricate frescos, oil paintings and stained glass windows. Built in 1918 and painted in 1940, the former church…
