Baldelli-Hunt's $100/person fundraiser in Providence

Why is it that Rep. Baldelli-Hunt has to go out of the district to hold a fundraiser?  Also, why is she charging the exorbitant amount of $100 per person?  Who in Woonsocket has that kind of money?

The simple answer to that question is, no one. That's why she's taking her fundraising to a Providence venue, Costantino's Ristorante on Federal Hill.

For the casual observer in Woonsocket, that's the restaurant owned by the family of the former finance chairman, Steven Costantino. The same Steven Costantino who helped push through legislation that got Curt Schilling $75 million for his now defunct 38 Studios. The same bill that Rep. Jon Brien co-sponsored and Rep. Baldelli-Hunt raised no objections to.

So, it looks like Ms. Baldelli-Hunt has nowhere else to troll for funds, so she's looking to hit up her wealthy freinds, the same friends who talked her out of voting for a tax equity bill even though she originally signed on as a co-sponsor.

So, how many of her supporters here on the Patch are going to Rep. Baldelli-Hunt's big shindig in Providence tonight?

Funny how so many people were up in arms and defending her questionable use of an untrademarked yet clearly misleading charitable symbol on her campaign signs; yet no one has made a peep about her charging $100 per person to a fundraiser at a Providence restaurant.

If she's so committed to bringing businesses to Woonsocket, why is she taking her business to Providence? Maybe I'll go tonight and film who shows up at this event. It should be interesting to find out just how few residents of Woonsocket show up.

Fundraiser dinners that cost 50 or 100 a plate are pretty common.
I certainly won't be going, lol....but this is normal.
It would be GREAT if she had a local fundraiser, too. Maybe someone should suggest that, or ask if she's tried.
Of course, if she were having a 40$ a plate fundraiser at, say, River Falls,
you'd simply be attacking her for expecting the struggling residents of Woonsocket to cough up money for her, lol.

No matter what she does, you'll find the lead lining =)
If she gave out free bottled water on a hot day, you'd point out that plastic bottles are unhealthy.

Btw, filming people going into a restaurant? How will you know which people are there for the fundraiser and which are just customers?

Unless you go inside, and it may not be legal to film the customers INside a restaurant without the permission of the owner or manager....
so, once again, I suggest you get legal advice!

I suggest you keep your advice to yourself. I'm sure there will be plenty of people there who run check-cashing businesses that benefited from the legislation that she introduced to help out her brother. I'm pretty sure the owner of the business, the family of the man who pushed through the bill that got Curt Schilling his $75 million dollars would be thrilled. Oh, and for the record, Lisa jumped right on board and voted to make sure Mr. Schilling got his money and now the state is out more than $100 million dollars. Maybe Lisa should use the money she raises to start paying back that debt.

Baldelli-Hunt voting yes on it?
...yeah. Virtually all of the reps did. In fact, among all Ri senators and reps,
only one opposed it.
Why the overwhelming response?

Well, it was a bill to create hundreds of jobs in RI,
and neither Curt Schilling nor his specific company were named in the bill,
and no time was allowed for debate.

During the 2010 session when it was voted on, RI desperately needed jobs growth, and banks were not lending. The bill made it seem like multiple businesses would have access to the loan from the total sum.
It was introduced at the last possible moment so that there would be no time to examine it closely. Look to the people who did this -- people like Steve Constantino, Helio Melio in the house, or then-gov. Carcieri who made the initial deal with Schilling--
rather than the reps who voted on it, thinking it was a job creation program that would help mutliple businesses with good bond ratings,
and thus, a good thing for our state's economy.

It passed UNANIMOUSLY in the Senate,
and with only ONE objection in the House.

This can all be found in files at www.politifact.com,
and video of the bill coming up on the house floor, as well as the original text of the bill, all bear this out.

Don't take my word for it. Do your own research.
I'm a deep reader, and never take this kind of smearing at face value, whether I like or dislike the target.

As fro the video at the restaurant, I mean, by all means, try it.

But, I don't see what you can do other than film inside the restaurant... I mean, how else could you really establish who was going to her fundraiser, and who was just taking the wife out for a romantic dinner, lol?
I'm not picking on you here, I'm serious.
If you think some of these people are slippery, then obviously, you should assume a loose, greasy trap won't hold them, lol.

Filming outside, 100% legal, but not solid proof.
Filming inside, I don't know.... Be careful. I really think you could get into trouble with that, especially if you posted it publicly, which would be the only purpose for doing it at all.

James I went back and read several of the last blogs you wrote and they all have the same theme -anti Lisa,Jon Brien and Phillips, but mostly Lisa. I did notice you were pro raising tax for people making over$ 250,000 and the 13.8 supplemental tax. I also noticed you mentioned you used to be a news editor. Are you getting paid to write these blogs? It seems like you(or who sponsors you) feel we can tax our way out of this.

DR, he's nothing more than a Obama following liberal that thinks the way out of of every problem facing this country is through higher taxes!

I've got a saying for him to contemplate;

"You're always a liberal until you get a real job and start to pay real taxes"

Then, all of a sudden, things have a whole new meaning..........

A fund raiser is just that. It is for people who CAN afford to donate to whatever the cause. I am not going because I usually go to fundraisers for charities, not politicians. I hope she raises what she needs from those who support her, and who can afford it. That is what this country is about. Freedom of choice.

I dont blame lisa for doing the fund raiser in providence. what else could be done? Not too many people in woonsocket would attend if it was in woonsocket unless it was at the food kitchen. So why bother to have it here.

The next best thing that lisa could do in woonsocket is have a picknic at social park.A two dollar donation and "bring your own food"

Speaking of fundraisers. Found this on the public property data base http://data.visionappraisal.com/WoonsocketRI/findpid.asp?iTable=pid&pid=2318 Why would Lisa Baldelli Hunt buy a property from Councilman Brien the same day that he bought it from someone else but she paid him $110,000 more than he paid earlier the same day? Then only a few months later she sells the property to a convicted felon (according to RI Court Connect Website) ? Just curious

I guess the link doesnt work. Go to vision appraisals site http://data.visionappraisal.com/WoonsocketRI/search.asp and enter 20 / A / 41 / 9 in the Map Lot and unit fields.

Councilman Al Brien is a real estate agent.
He sells property for a living.
And Rep. Lisa Badelli-Hunt is....you guessed it.
A real estate agent.

I think it's worth looking into, but this could well be just a normal real estate transaction of some kind, where Al Brien made a nice profit.

And though it's completely legal to legitimately buy or sell anything from a convict (can you imagine if you had to prove no one you bought or sold anything from had ever been convicted of a crime? holy jimminy)
I'm not sure if he was a "convict" in the sense of "went to prison", looking at these files. It seems like he definitely paid some fines, or at least court costs...
Defendant Search can be hard to follow....

Why does al brien buy a property from himself then sell it to his partner (Lisa) the same day he buys it. Then they find a straw man. Its called money laundering people. You really think she is representing her district?

But we were talking about Baldelli-Hunt, and I could find no evidence whatsoever that she was in any way involved. (I wasn't looking for Brien, sine he wasn't part of the conversation. He's an entirely different kettle of fish, and you won't find me talking much about him.)

Was he the third sponsor? Could you please link to the info?

I was interested enough to look into it when I had time today, with some web searches...Brien is indeed the third sponsor.
Several articles have him complaining that Helio Melio brough him on board and he had no idea what the actual behind-the-scenes plans were.

I don't know if I believe that, lol,
but it's possible.
The wording of the bill itself was very general and non-specific.

I don't really understand Marc's statement either.
It looks (to my uneducated eyes) like Al Brien purchased a property and sold it at a profit, and then later, Baldelli-Hunt sold it, too.
Maybe not, I don't know.
Anyone who is concerned something illegal might have happened, and knows more about real estate, should absolutely look into it!!
(of course, if something really illegal happened, I expect to see it reported to the authorities. If it's just used for the election, then it's probably trash accusations!)

But because they're both real estate agents, and both buy and sell property for a living, this doesn't seem that strange to me.
And I definitely don't see Al Brien buying anything "from himself" on that page, unless I'm missing something.

Though, I am interested in the abrupt topic jumps.
As soon as an accusation is answered, another is introduced, bam! It smacks of political sniping.

Frankly, that's what is drawing my attention and interest more than anything else.
I dislike political sniping, and like to do my own research to the best of my limited ability.
Even if it's a politician I don't like and plan to vote against,
I don't like wishy-washy accusations that jump rail every five minutes instead of being looked into. I prefer discussion with an attention span-- it tends to be more honest.

So Marc B. I finally found what you meant. Al Brien was the president of New River Associates Inc according to the states corporate database online. So now its even more curious ? Al Brien Sells the property to himself for $25,000 more than he paid for it in the first place under a different name. Then he sells it to Lisa Baldelli Hunt the very same day and she pays $110,000 more than Al Brien paid earlier in the same day. Then she sells it to a Stanley Irza (convicted Felon) a short time later for another $5000 and the land is only asessed at 56K. That does not make sense at all.

Come on "Really" that land is a gold mine. I'm sure there will be a casino there shortly. Please has a Baldelli or Brien ever had a story that wasn't shady? Everyone knows what they are all about. Then you have Jon wanting to build his waste to energy on Dads land.

She portrays herself as a savy business woman. Yet she pays 110k more than her partner Al for the parcel from him the same day he buys it from himself? Why aren't the State Police looking into this? Oh thats right. She is supporting Doherty
