Officials and a crowd of about 50 met at the Martin Luther King Memorial on South Main Street Monday morning for the celebration of the Civil Rights Leader's birthday, lauding recent public service and calling for more. 

Mayor Leo Fontaine, Councilmen Christopher Beauchamp and Bob Moreau, Rep. Stephen Casey (D-Dist. 50) and RI Treasurer Gina Raimondo spoke during the brief ceremony, calling on teamwork and community service to address the city's problems as well as those of the state.

The weekend's events celebrating King began on Friday with a banquet at Savini’s Restaurant on Rathbun Street, followed by a Day of Community Service at the Woonsocket Police Deptartment lobby, the painting of new murals at The Woonsocket High School Gym and Woonsocket YMCA and cleaning inside Kevin K. Coleman Elementary School. On Sunday, a worship service in King's honor was held at St. James Baptist Church, 340 South Main St.

Monday's ceremony ended the weekend's celebration of King's memory and legacy.
