Marines - On this day in 1945, according to brainyhistory.com, US Marines raised the stars and stripes during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Photos were taken of the event, and a statue memorializing it, the Marine Corps War Memorial, rests just outside Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.
