Police Log: City Man Charged With Sending Penis Pics To Minor
The following arrest information was supplied by the Woonsocket Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
Woonsocket Police charged Dereck J. Daniel, 29, with Pornography/Obscene Materials, Sept. 16 after police discovered he had sent pictures of his penis to a minor he was dating and had pushed her during an argument.
Daniel was already in custody on another arrest, charged with two counts of assault when a young girl entered the police department at 2:43 a.m. and asked Officer Michael Martufi if she could speak to him. When questioned, the girl originally said Daniel was her step brother, with whom she was very close.
When questioned further, the girl admitted that Daniel was not actually her step brother, but like a brother to her and so she referred to him as her step brother. More questioning revealed that the girl's mother was not aware she had come to visit Daniel.
Police called the girl's mother, who told them that not only was Daniel not her daughter's step brother — she did not know him at all.
At this point, the girl's mother came to the station and spoke with police, telling them that the girl was lying about being 16-years-old. Police noticed that the girl had been spending a lot of time using her phone, and asked the girl for it, suspecting it might contain evidence of the girl's relationship with Daniel. The girl gave police the phone, and they handed it over to her mother, who began to look through it.
Moments later, according to the report, the mother's expression changed from neutral to mortified. The mother told police there were pictures of a man's penis on her daughter's phone, as well as photos of her kissing a man she didn't recognize. She gave the phone to police, and they confirmed the man kissing the girl was Daniel.
When questioned, the girl said Daniel had sent her pictures of his penis.
When asked why she had been lying, the girl replied, "Because I'm worthless." Martufi and another officer assured her she wasn't worthless, and told her they thought she was being victimized.
The girl said she was dating Daniel, and that the two had gotten into an argument the previous night, during which Daniel had thrown things at her, trashed the apartment and pushed her down when she said she wanted to leave.
Police asked her to sign a statement to that effect.
