Police Log: Car Passenger Waves Over Police, Fights Five Officers

Disorderly man ungrateful after officer checks on his safety.

An officer who stopped a car thinking a passenger might need some help wound up needing assistance of his own Tuesday when the man proved unruly and intoxicated instead of in distress.

On June 26 at about 1:06 a.m., while Woonsocket Police Officer Timothy Greene was patrolling the area of East School Street and Rathbun Street he observed a Black Ford SUV. As the vehicle passed by, he noticed a man in the passenger seat motioning to him.

"Out of concern for the passenger, I turned around and initiated a motor vehicle stop to check on the condition of the operator as well as the passenger," Greene wrote in his report.

Greene pulled the vehicle over on Mill Street before the entrance to the Mill Street Condo complex. As he approached the vehicle, he immediately noticed the odor of alcohol coming from the passenger section of the SUV. The vehicle had two men and two women in it, including the driver.

The driver, Lynn Archambault, 44, said the group had just left a family gathering and were fine. Greene asked the front seat passenger, Kenneth Michael Beauchesne, 27, of 435 Chapel St., Burriville, for his name and ID. Beauchesne's response: "Go f*** yourself."

Greene asked again, and Beauchesne replied, "You can suck my d***." Greene said Beauchesne appeared intoxicated, with glassy eyes and slurred speech. He asked Beauchesne to get out of the SUV and began a pat down of Beauchesne, who struggled during the process.

Beauchesne continued to struggle, striking Greene in the chest and legs. Greene struck him in the face and ribs, and also used his tazer to subdue Beauchesne, with no effect.

Greene attempted to use his tazer on Beauchesne again, but he swung his arm at the wires, snapping them and rendering the tazer ineffective.

At this point, two other officers arrived to help restrain Beauchesne, but they were unable to subdue him. A fourth officer arrived and attempted to use pepper spray on him, but Beauchesne kicked the can out of the officer's hand.

A fifth officer showed up on the scene with another tazer and used it on Beauchesne, finally subduing him.

Greene suffered swelling in his hand and minor scratches from the incident. Beauchesne was arrested and was charged with three counts of simple assault, one count of resisting arrest and one count of disorderly conduct.

Spoken like a person that deserves to be stopped and investigated by the police. If you are minding your business and not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about. Otherwise, you deserve to be "harrassed".

An awful lot of good people live on Rathbun street but it's getting disgusting every day. I avoid going by there if I can, the street is full of litter, etc. and it's a scary street to drive by alone.

NO LIE -- the report did say all of that he just would not give up even when handcuffed.

It doesn't appear that the article indicates he was handcuffed ("he swung his arm at the wires, snapping them and rendering the tazer ineffective"). That being said - if you curse at and assault a police officer, odds are you are going to get your @ss kicked. No sympathy here.

If you are going to act like a degenerate then you are going to get treated like one.

Violence is UNACCEPTABLE by anyyone. I can not believe you people are writing that it was OK for this man to be beat up by 5 police officers. I agree that there are alot of nasty people in the city of Woonsocket and they are giving all a bad reputation but honestly unless this man was Superman or the Incredible Hulk....5 police officers is excessive. All to often lately we are saying it is ok for the Police of Woonsocket to use excessive force to subdue their "suspects" and that is not ok.
