Live Blog: November 2012 Rhode Island Election

Patch will have a team of editors in our Patch communities covering Tuesday's election in real-time in our live blog.

After more than a year of hype, hundreds of speeches and millions spent on campaign ads, the 2012 election is finally here — and Patch is covering it live in a real-time Election Day Blog.

We will have more than a dozen editors throughout Rhode Island in our Patch communities on Tuesday, talking to voters, election officials and others — and providing updates and results in the blog from 2 p.m. until the final races are called.

We also want to hear from you, so make sure your post a comment in the blog. Tell us how you voted for and why; share your experiences at the polls; or just weigh in on the big election of 2012.

The Election Day blog will launch around 2 p.m. Tuesday...but you can sign up now to receive an email alert once the blog goes live.

SLOCUM

The polls opened here at 7 am.
Arrived at 7:05 to a crowd of voters in autumn jackets, fifty or more people, in a single line winding out the door onto the packed parking lot of a rural polling place in Slocum. Wandering sleepy eyes affirmed that there was no valet parking; there were others with puzzled looks searching for the non-existent coffee truck. Still we stayed. We nodded to each other. The long campaign with its highs and lows was finally over and differences were about to be resolved [maybe] at the voting booth. Ah, freedom!

Go Vote Today!

SK Voter arrived in West Kingstown around 730 a.m. Polling place had wrong ballots (those of NK) and, they did not get there til just before 9 a.m. This happened in other locations such as Woonsocket. Seriously, whose job was it to check which ballots went where? Epic fail, esp. since polls close an hour earlier than usual. When the ballots were finally delivered to W. Kingston it was only small amount, sure hope they clear this up soon.

I was at West Kingston too, right at 7 am. They better have more ballots by this afternoon - this is outrageous!!

Those of you who keep voting democrat because you think the government should have a bigger role in our lives should pay attention. If they can't get something as simple as delivering the correct ballots to the correct town, how can they be trusted with our healthcare system and retirement system.

You do know that the polling place staff is largely volunteers - right?

Isn't free labor what Conservatives want, with the competence level that implies?

Looks like big turnout in East Greenwich. All polls had long lines at 730, but things moving smoothly. Well organized effort. Candidates and supporters are out in force. If voter comments at the polls are any indication, it's going to be a Republican year in EG!

Voted at Matunuck Scchool around 7:05 AM. There were two lines and no one to help direct which one to get into, ended up in the wrong one and had to go wait in the other on all over again, took about 45 minutes total other than that it went smooth.

Vote Republican so they can tell women what medical procedures they can have, what religion is acceptable, and get your free copy of their new book: "How to offshore your money and jobs and make people happy about it." Also included is a pamphlet version of: "1001 lies that Mitt Romney sold to the American people".

Let's start with the freedom for old people to pay for their own medical care, then.

"Folks, this election is about the choice of 2 things....."
A classic fallacy, a false choice.

Is the World too complicated for you? Try Fox - they'll make sense of it.

J McMahon...so you would rather have the Gov't medical panel under obama-care tell both woman and men what health procedures they will approve or deny?? Also businesses only "off shore" jobs" if the policies from Wahsington DC FORCE them offshore!! If the gov't policies PUNISH success with high taxes and over regulation...where is a businessman to go??? Our country already has an owners manual on what "limited powers" the federal gov't has over us (free citizens). The gov't job is not to tell us what kind of health care we should have...what kind of lightbulb we can use...how many gallons per flush our toilet uses...how much salt we can put on our food or even if we can have a large soda! Just because your not in a jail cell that closes behind you...that doesn't mean you are truely FREE.It's up to you if left alone that determines whether you are successful of not!! Personal responsibility is the key throughout life...stop looking for someone else (gov't) to do for you what you can do for yourself.

Are you delusional? Have you actually read the AHCA? Do you know how to read?

Romney off-shored the jobs under BUSH! so what does that say about your beloved party? How about Mitt wanting Detroit to go bankrupt then making money on the bailout? What do you call that? Good business? No, it's lying.

Don't spout your Constitution literalist mumbo jumbo, It makes you look more ignorant. Do yourself a big favor, take your meds and turn off Fox for a while. Right now your just another support of the party that thinks rape is "God's will".

I have made it on my own but not everybody is that lucky. The difference between being a country and community or just a collection of individuals is helping each other out and caring for each other. I would rather be a member of a community and not just someone who is just out for themselves. That is the difference between Democrats and Republicians.

I know just what you mean! Next thing you know, the government will be butting in giving us funding for highways, firefighters and police, education, etc... oh wait..they do that already.

Ok... I know! Then they will think they have the right to move in and define school standards (No Child Left Behind - GW Bush-R). Hmm.. OK, maybe not that example.

I've got it! The government will try and stop us from being able to own another human being. That's it! (Abraham Lincoln-R)

Face it folks. No matter what the party, government intervention happens so get over it. As a taxpayer, and knowing we are third to last in tax burden of industrialized countries, it's really time we all stop infighting.

Republicans wanting less government is an absolute joke. This is the party that wanted a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage...that's sounds like more government involvement to me....pretty intrusive too. What they really want, is more of "their" government. Just 6 weeks ago, Mitt Romney stated that he would do away with FEMA and leave it to the states....anybody want to ask NY or NJ how that would have worked out? Call Chris Christie and ask him...

Republicans want to govern less, not less government. Learn the difference. Isn't saying republicans wanting to ban gay marriage a complete genralization of the party? Not all republicans are conservative Christians.

During the mid-terms 2 years ago, it was part of the platform. Isn't that what a party platform is, "a generalization of a party"?

Comment_arrow

Jon

10:51 am on Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Yes it may have been part of the party platform during the mid-terms but that is the views of the party leaders. I refuse to belive that people that share the views of the Republican Party will vote on the marriage amendment based on the party's popular beliefs rather than personal religious and moral beliefs (I don't understand what religion has to do with depriving others of the right to be happy, but I digress). But now that Obama is in office again can I have my no obligation welfare checks payed for by the tax payers dollars? I can't wait to meet illegal aliens in lecture hall and discuss the various tuition funding they recieve. There are faults in each party but I would rather be financially secure than having a "fair" society where illegals are given the same rights as tax paying citizens.

You complain that I used a generalization, then, to try and clarify your position, you do the exact same thing. You think all Democrats want welfare? Or education for Illegal aliens?
Where do you think the RNC got "Marriage Amend." plank? From the base. Republican core voters.

I voted first thing this morning in Coventry. It was cold and frosty outside, but all the volunteers, family & friends holding signs along the way were nothing but smiles. The lines were painless and the volunteers moved things right along.

It made me so happy to see a family of 3 in front of me, the parents had brought their young son to learn about voting today, what awesome parents! My friends are teaching their son about it too, but he's 4 and thinks we are voting for "presents", which I think would be WAY more fun.

I got to stop and say hi to David Tomasso, Lisa Tomasso's (D) husband, who recognized me from here on the Patch, which was so suprising! When I was leaving the polls he was having a friendly conversation with a volunteer for Glen Shilbley (R). People from opposite parties were being NICE to each other!

Voting today has been the exact polar opposite of all the hype and snark that I've been reading for the past (FOREVER) few months. It was nice, and civil, and respectful. I hope that little boy today learned that this is what voting and elections are about. Sharing your opinion in a way that makes a difference, not in a way that turns you into a jerk.

Only votes get counted, not how many people you piss off.

I had the same experience as Chris on Chapel Street in Newport this morning. Took me 1.5 hours at 8:30am to get to the voting booths. The A-L line was about 5x's slower than the M-Z line (I was in the former). Polling booths were vacant. It was the one-person check-in that slowed things down. My partner is now voting and just got in the door of the building. He's been there since 4:00. It's now 5:00. He's guessing about a 3-hour wait in toto. He texted me saying, "I'd really like to know who was in charge of this polling station, so I could be sure NOT vote for them." Not sure what's going on at the Chapel/Newport station, but people are going to be upset if they don't get in by closing time. I've never experienced such wait-times in all my 20+ years of voting.

I was wondering the same thing this morning at Kent Heights in East Providence - I really didn't want to vote for whoever was responsible for that mess. There was one person checking in and they had to yell all of your personal info across the gym to someone else sitting at a table 20 feet away. There were about 12 booths and I never saw more than 4 people voting at one time. And no one was watching the scanner, so that was backing things up, too and I'm not even sure my vote was recorded. Not to mention they kept switching where the lines were and yelling at us for not paying attention to the signs that weren't even there... Total reversal from past elections when you could walk in and vote, with maybe a 10 minute wait for Presidential elections. Boo.

So was it a money issue then? No funds to staff the polling locations? But aren't they all volunteer staffers anyway? And Lord knows the 1950 voting booths don't cost any $. Update: It took my partner 2.5 hours to vote. He said if someone had stood up and declared themselves dictator, he'd have gladly supported him or her and gone home. Ah well, his vote counted (we assume).

Hard to believe that Cicilline was re-elected after all the damage and lies about economic state of Providence. Oh well, the people have spoken.
