Five Things You Need To Know Today: Sept. 22

Today is Thursday, Sept 22, 2011. Here are five things you need to know.

Postcards from Heaven: Maureen Hancock presents "Postcards from Heaven" tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at. In this fundraiser for the creative projects of Breaking Branches Pictures, the author of "The Medium Next Door" connects some audience members with their loved ones who have passed on. Dubbed "the Comedian Medium," Maureen's T.V. show will premiere this fall on the STYLE network. She uses her light hearted humor to take the edge off of an overwhelming subject matter. Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased in advance at www.breakingbranchesevents.com

Hoof it: Today is Car Free Day, which encourages folks to do without their automobiles for the day to promote sustainable transportation. People are encouraged instead to ride a train, bus, bicycle, carpool, subway, vanpool, walk or telework. We probably all need the exercise anyway.

City Planner: The Woonsocket Planning Board will meet in executive session at 3 p.m. today in the second floor conference room at City Hall to interview candidates for the position of City Planner.

The award is expected to enable CCRI to continue providing free academic or career advisement and assistance to qualified Rhode Islanders. With 18,000 students annually, CCRI is the largest community college in New England.

RAINN Day: Today is RAINN day, a national campaign sponsored each year by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) designed to bring education to college campuses. Events at campuses across the country will be aimed at fighting sexual violence. For more information, visit their website.
