Father-Daughter Dances: What Do You Think?
Cranston officials have been forced to stop hosting father-daughter dances after an ACLU complaint.
Earlier in the school year, Cranston parents were notified that father-daughter and mother-son activities will no longer be held in Cranston Public Schools because school lawyers concluded the traditions violate state gender discrimination laws.
The action was triggered by a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union, said School Superintendent Judith Lundsten. The letter was written on behalf of a mother who said her daughter was unable to go to the father-daughter dance.
Federal laws under Title IX allow father-son and mother-daughter events but state law is more restrictive, Lundsten said.
So, what do you think about the law and about father-daughter or mother-son dances?

There's got to be more to this than meets the eye.

sigh...in this day and age there's probably a 50/50 chance that the mother has no idea who the father is or the father is a dead-beat loser...so it makes total sense that she'd ruin these events for all of the other kids - it's easier than facing up to her own poor decisions that put her in this position.

Unreal!!! Another reason why the everyone hates the ACLU. What about the poor daughters who have fathers, why should they suffer? I wish Cranston would fight this.

Perhaps a more inclusive guardian/dependent dance should be held.

Chorus, Don't forget about deadbeat mothers. There's more of them out there than you think. See how when you think deadbeat parent you automatically think Father?

John - that is a good point but statistics show mothers usually get custody. It's a shame people make poor decisions and the children (and tax payers) usually pay the price.

Chorus, Yes statistics show that mothers usually get custody but statistics also show that out of the mothers that do not have custody the percentage of deadbeats is higher than men who do not have custody of their children.

This is the result of one, that's right, ONE complaint about a woman's daughter not having a father to take her to the "Father, Daughter" Dance, so please, cancel all dances going forward so "I" don't feel bad!
Note the "I".........
This is truly unbelievable isn't it?
Some of my best memories are of my daughter and I sitting in place to have our picture taken, my precious little girl, and I, me in my finest suit, with her in her tiny, beautiful dress and flowers that I gave her before getting in the car to go to the dance. The photos are priceless.
To have all this taken away from future dad's, and by the way, mom's could take their daughters to the dance too, is criminal!
What the HELL is this country coming to?
Cranston, stand up and do what’s right! Keep these dances and precious memories going foreward, and don’t fold to these, (in lack of any better term) JABRONIES!

Why can't memories of "precious little girls" and fathers in their "finest suits" still be made at a "Danced with a Loved One"?? The dances are NOT going away...the TITLES are! Why does it need to be a FATHER Daughter Dance or MOTHER Son dance?? Can't we still continue the fun traditions by changing the name of the event and thus not exclude any of the children? I am a teacher...I do not have my own children...but I see the children that have been hurt because they have a parent that has passed away or is not in their lives by no fault of their own. So should they suffer? As I said, no children need to suffer or be excluded from the fun if we just try to be mindful by changing the title.

If a child, lets say a daughter, does not have a father or dad that she can depend on, why not have her mother take her to a family dance. We see mother and daughter dance all the time at other events. The only problem from here, is that poor child has a garbage mother and father. Then lets go one step further, let the ACLU, stop lousy parents.

Grades k through 6 I attended every year with all 3 of my Daughters and was proud to accompany such a lovley young lady each and every year.
It's to bad someone had to ruin it for all because of their own poor decisions.
A simple rewording of the event such as Girls or Boys night out could have fixed it all.
It appears that Political Correctness my just be the cause of the downfall of Eastern Society!

Is the new trend in the world to complain to the ACLU everytime you don't like something? It seems to be. This falls under the same category as "everyone gets a trophy so no one has hurt feelings". We are setting our children up to fail by teaching them to not accept differences, etc. If the girl doesn't have a father, I am sure that there is a male figure that could have taken her. If not, then as a mom, I would have called the school and explained the problem and taken her myself. I sincerely doubt that the school would have said "no, you can't go". Different family structures are what makes a person unique. We need to stop catering to every single difference in a person. It has gotten completely out of control and the ACLU just caters to this. I have had it with the politically correct crowd. I am not saying to be rude or disrespectful, but come on!

Agree with suzy all the way. Some people are afraid to fight back when this stupidity occurs. I don't blame ACLU, I blame the parents for not fighting back.
