Driver Takes Car On The Ice At Cass Park

Wrong turn lands motorist on frozen pond.

Sometimes drivers land in hot water, but a wrong turn on Cass Avenue put one motorist's morning commute on ice.

Jetty Cherian, the owner of Cass Ave Food Mart, said he was alerted to a car on the ice at Cass Pond, across the street from his shop by customers at about 8 a.m. "The kids came in and they say, 'Jetty, did you see the car over there?'," Cherian said.

Sitting on the ice on Cass Pond was a car. It hadn't broken through the ice, and the driver seemed OK. Cherian watched as police, two fire trucks, an ambulance and a tow truck filled up the parking lot at Cass Park

Woonsocket Police Public Information Officer Jamie Paone said they recieved the call for a car on the ice at Cass Pond at about 7:56 a.m. She said the driver, Ziengxay Kmon, 52, of Woonsocket was driving down Elm Street and attempting to take a right on Cass Avenue when something went wrong, causing her to drive across Cass Avenue, down the bank and onto the pond.

The car was towed off the ice with a chain. There were no injuries from the incident, and no citation. "It's just one of those crazy things that happens," Paone said, adding the driver was fortunate the weather has been so cold lately — ensuring the ice was solid enough to hold the car.

Please take this person's license to drive away from them. A "wrong turn" should mean that there is actually a ROAD to "wrong turn" onto....not an embankment and a pond. Seriously. Sorry if you disagree but that is my opinion.

Possibly a medical condition? Could have had a TIA. Happy to hear she wasn't hurt.

When Cass Park was re-done I suggested to the Architechs G & L that the abutments along Cass Ave. should be metal heavy duty guardrail near the pond area to prevent this problem. They agreed but didn't follow through. Lucky the pond was frozen !I Guess I was right.
