City Woman Volunteers At Providence Middle School

Laurie Smith joined more than 320 people at Roger Williams Middle School.

On Friday, Aug. 3, Woonsocket resident Laurie Smith joined Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and more than 320 volunteers to transform Roger Williams Middle School in Providence - just in time for the start of the school year.

Taveras joined employee volunteers from Fidelity Investments and Serve Rhode Island, a HandsOn Netwrok local action center, in the third annual Transformation Day at his alma mater, Roger Williams Middle School. Volunteers completed close to 1,900 hours of service during this day-long effort, including landscaping, carpentry, painting, and other repairs to improve the overall physical environment of the school.

I feal that its pretty bad that citizens have to donate their time to do repairs and clean up when the cosodians are being paid well to do their jobs. Does't anybody ever see the cause of the problems.

Russ, I'm guessing you dont volunteer any of your time to anything unless you are getting paid to do so! We volunteer's volunteer our time because we choose to give back to the less fortunate. It's not a chore, we like to help were help is needed regardless of what community is on the recieving end. Oh and by the way...the work we did at Roger Williams Middle School was much needed work that WE volunteers had a great time doing so and not only did we VOLUNTEER out time, the supplies where also donated from paint to loom to mulch and flowers to beautify the grounds, wood to make benches, this kind of work is WAY out of the job description of a custodian!! Thanks Laurie
