Recycling To Be Collected From Blue Bins A Final Time Monday

The bins will be emptied and left for Coastal Recycling Monday. Recycling will now be contained in only the green bins.

Kiss those blue bins good-bye — the city's solid waste contractor, Waste Management, will collect recycling from them a final time Monday.

The city is selling the blue bins, about 10,000 of them, to Cumberland for a total of $148,000, said Michael Debroisse, Solid Waste Department superintendent.

Waste Management will set the empty bins in front of local homes to be picked up by Coastal Recycling of North Smithfield, said Debroisse. He stressed people should not be concerned when the blue bins are gone - the green bins the city still has can now be used for all the city's recycling thanks to the state's new single stream recycling program.

This summer, a group of young volunteers helped put stickers on some of the city's green bins listing the types of recycling that can now be put in them, but they weren't able to get to all of them. The stickers can be picked up at the city's Recycle Drop-Off Center located at 943 River St., he said.

Debroisse said anyone who decides to keep a bin for themselves will win a $40 charge for the owner of their property.

Residents can direct questions about the city's recycling program to Debroisse at 401-767-8880.

I follow patch so I have been aware that this was going to happen for a bit now but I think its shame on the city for not sending us all a notice in the mail or even a leave behind sticker on our bins to make sure everyone is aware. I have family that do not really use the internet that often and do not follow patch like I do that had no idea that this was going on nor that they would be charged a fee if the bins weren't out to be taken away. I would hate to be a landlord that does not live in the city or follow patch because after this week they may owe anywhere between 40-120 per building they own here in the city if they are unaware.

Just another way to make money of people. I had no idea either until the other day. I do follow patch but not on a daily basis and I usually only check the police and school news. My landlord whom is not local had no idea either. The city is quick to send him a notice though if they go through our garbage and feel everyone in the apartments are not recycling everything. Why not send him a notice for this???

So, do we leave them on the sidewalk this week? This is still a typical Woonsocket mystery; no-one really knows if we should leave them out or not... The article doesn't clearly state one way or the other. Get your 40 bucks handy people ~ they're looking for extra $$$ from the taxpayers again.

Yes, you leave them on the sidewalk after they've been emptied for Coastal Recycling to collect: "Waste Management will set the empty bins in front of local homes to be picked up by Coastal Recycling of North Smithfield, said Debroisse."

They are probably not going to come knocking looking for them if you don't leave them out.

Please leave the BLUE cart(s) out on your normal collection day. Waste Management will empty the recyclables and soon after a truck from Coastal Recycling will be by to collec the cart(s).
We have made every feasible attempt to notify the residents of the changes to the recycling program. Should there be any questions you may reach me at 767-8880.

How about sending a letter to residents? The city has no problem sending me a letter when the lid of me trash can is 2 inches above closed and they won't collect the trash.

so they're selling them for $14.80 each and if there not there you have to pay $40 how can they justify charging you $40 for something that's only worth $14.80
