Autumnfest Buttons On Sale City-Wide
Purchase of button for $1 helps to fund future Autumnfest events.
Autumfest Buttons are on sale again throughout the city, with the proceeds helping to fund the annual fall celebration coming Oct. 6-8.
This week, as is the tradition, Mayor Leo Fontaine recieved the first of the buttons from Button Chairman Joe Barosso, said Linda Plays of the Mayor's office. Fontaine will carry the button for the next six weeks, presenting it to Autumnfest Grand Marshal Bob Picard, chairman of Woonsocket Senior Services and a long-time Rotary member, at the Grand Marshal reception Oct. 2.
The Autmnfest parade will kick off at 9:30 a.m. sharp on Diamond Hill Road Oct. 8 during Columbus Day weekend, said parade organizer Linda Plays.
Barosso said buttons are for sale at all the city's Li'l General locations, as well as the chain's locations on Rte. 146A in North Smithfield and on Rte. 104/Greenville Road.
The buttons are also available at Broaster House, Pepin Lumber, Beacon Charter School, Milford Savings, Kennedy Manor, Park View Manor, Waterview Apartments, ParkSquare Florist and Don's Barber Shop.
Wright's Dairy Farm at 200 Woonsocket Hill Road and Dean Bank in Blackstone, MA and Bellingham, MA are also selling the buttons.
This year's headliner will be announced soon, said organizer Tim Paul. "We've just got to sign the contract with them." He said the act will be reconizable to Woonsocket residents as a former member of a popular band, but that's all he can say until the contract is a done deal.

Can we leave the politics off the subject for awhile? This has always been a much anticipated and enjoyable event for Woonsocket. Let's just have a good time and come together. Cohesiveness is much more fun than conflict.

Did the mayor pay for his button or the taxpayers. Should the tax payers know his badge number? Also i wish Joe Barossom would trim his mustash.

Dave, your anti everything drivel is getting old and repulsive. What alternatives to the financial crisis have you proposed? Please share them. We as a community are in this together and in order to get out of this mess the sacrifices must be shared. You will not be happy until every city employee is making minimum wage. Give your tired rhetoric a rest. It's getting old...

Read my above post for an alternative,if you choose not to then don't bother reading,i'm not forcing you to do anything. As a matter of fact,i find your acceptance of everything repulsive as well.Try some critical thinkng, you might just become a leader not a follower being led by the nose.

If you must know, the alternative is to amend the Fiscal Stability Act of 2010 to include bondholders in any kind of bankruptcy proceedings.Their doing it elsewhere in the country.I'm not gonna play this name calling thing,go ahead, critique my alternative.

We will need significant union concessions. Real savings now...not ten years from now. We also need a supplemental tax increase and a fair education funding formula from the State.

We need serious welfare and disability reform at the state level. We need serious immigration reform both in the state and country. Our state reps do not have the courage to propose or stand behind any serious reform needed to save real dollars.

I would gladly pay $5 for a button. Might just keep the Riff Raff away as well. I am a realist and therefore understand that taxes must be paid and on occasion taxes do go up. We had it pretty damn good when Suzie was in town and she and Leo were relying on state and federal dollars to pay the bills. The money is gone people. The rest of the state has very little pity for us because they saw their taxes going up every year. We have only ourselves to blame because we continued to elect them for that very reason...and the chicken dinners weren't too bad either. We reap what we sow gentlemen. Now pay up...

What are "Riff Raffs"? I hope you mean the boomers that destroyed the city I grew up in. My generation has to find the $ to buy up the awful properties that your generation let go to waste. What a disgrace. Make sure when you use the word "we" you notate specifically who you are. Cuz I'm not part of your "we". My "Riff Raffs" and I are going to fix the city that your "we" broke.
You can have my dollar, but you can keep the weird button thing.

common sense. if we were to pay 5 per button to get the riff out, we would go bankrupt. There are over 2 hundred vacant buildings now, that number would grow to about 1500. lets keep the button at 1.00

Lol. On the contrary, Russ. I speak of the self-righteous closet free-loaders. The ones that took over Memere and Pepere's house and stuck them in a home. The ones that live in their own 1000 sq ft world, where everyone else is just in their way. The ones that think "sacrifice" is working overtime or having to park far away.
Russ, you should know better than me. How many homes in the city have you seen that were built strong but were let go to waste by neglect and abuse? Our grandparents built this city with every ounce of their fortitude. But, once their children took the reigns, the grand spiral took shape. You go to a house in the North End and the most impressive quality, by far, is the foundation. Built almost 100 years ago and still as solid as day one with not even a crack in the cement. The living area and the exterior, on the other hand, are often reflections of the occupants...paint chipping, roof leaking, and other areas of neglect.
This is a metaphor for the structure of the city itself: a solid foundation but with years of disregard and overuse caused by a whole generation of takers. Fortunately, there are people like Russ that sees the value in maintaining a strong living environment and has the know-how to make something thrive in an otherwise faltering situation. It's sad that it takes someone from outside to save the city, since the citizens are too absorbed in their own lives to care.

still hope; I agree with you on your views and could add to them very easily. I have been a resident of this city all my life. invested millions inevery part of the city to see most all washed away. living in the north end for 15 years in one of the homes you speek of and finally let it go. Taxes were 8,000.00 per year Not worth it, because of this declining city, and its attitude. This city can change, but it cannot be treated with a bandaid just to get by till it springs another leak.If just 5 major items gets fixed it can be transformed. 3 of those items can be restored within 90 days. The city could begin prospering right away. its not that hard, in my view. We know the exact problem we know the solution. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to solve once and for all. I feel our mayor and city council know exactly what to do, and they can do it. the problem is the end of their political possitions. WE will make the sacrifice they should accept the sacrifice.

Hope, you don't speak of the "zombies " that infest this city. You can view the show every month on the 1st and the 15th. They move from the post office to Thundermist to NRI. Major problem is you can't throw a rock downtown without hitting a social service agency.

JR. if you get a person willing to buy your card at fifty cents on the dollar and give that person your card and pin number, you can get cash and get a button no problem.
Just dont tell daddy because i think he will be mad at you again. dont worry about getting the card back because you can tell them that you lost it and the stupid people at welfare will just issue a new free card no questions asked. The service at welfare is great there. Need anything else just ask me. I know everything
