Woonsocket Students Honored for Public Service

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis honored five Woonsocket students with 2012 Civic Leadership Awards, which are given annually to members of the senior class who make outstanding contributions to their school and their community.

“This award recognizes students who show an understanding of the importance public service has in a democratic society. They take the principles of civics and put them into action at home and at school,” said Mollis.

This year’s recipients are Jacob  Berard and Kerri Darling of Woonsocket High School, Robert Coveney and Nichole Marcolini of Beacon Charter High School and Kodie Spearman of Woonsocket Area Career & Technical Center. Mollis presented the awards at a State House ceremony as friends, faculty and family looked on.

Mollis asked high schools around the state to nominate members of the Class of 2012 based on their record of public service, leadership ability and academic achievement.

“My goal is to encourage young people to get involved. Their enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the civic life of their school and community are vital to the strength of our democracy. I hope their example inspires next year’s senior class," said Mollis.

Secretary of State Mollis is committed to making it easier to vote, helping businesses grow and making government more open and accessible. For more information on the programs and services offered by the Secretary of State, visit sos.ri.gov.

Perfection is not my goal. Effort is the goal. I am so glad that the state has honored these fine young people. Their effort has paid off. I am sure that most people on the Patch agree that we are proud of these young adults.

Russell, there are about 5 or 6 current articles on the Patch right now that illustrate the great achievements students in Northern Rhode Island have made. In sports, girls have won softball tournaments and the "Special" Olympians did well. In school, the local graduates are going off to many fine schools, including Harvard. Students have won foreign language prizes and the regional vocational school has won medals at the SkillsUSA. Volunteerism and patriotism are evident in the local parades. All you have to do is look to see the positive in our youth.
